What is NCLEX-RN and Why Does It Matter?
The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination – Registered Nurse) is the mandatory licensing exam for working as a Registered Nurse in the USA. Without passing NCLEX, you cannot practice as an RN in the United States — regardless of your Indian nursing degree or years of experience.
For Indian nurses, passing NCLEX unlocks the highest nursing salaries in the world — $60,000–$100,000+ per year in the USA — along with a clear pathway to a US Green Card through the EB-3 visa route.

Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN) — What Changed
Since April 2023, the NCLEX has transitioned to the Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN) format — a significant change that many Indian nurses are underprepared for. NGN focuses on clinical judgement and reasoning, not just knowledge recall.
New question types introduced in NGN:
- Extended Multiple Response (EMR) — select multiple correct answers with partial credit
- Matrix/Grid — match nursing actions to client conditions
- Drag and Drop — sequence, rationale, trend questions
- Bow-Tie items — analyse a clinical scenario holistically
- Highlight items — identify relevant information in nursing notes
